Enunciation is IMPORTANT!

This afternoon, as I was preparing lunch, Ben came into the kitchen and I heard him ask, "Mom, what would you say if I brought a gay boy home on Sunday?"

Understandably, his question took me by surprise and I quickly tried to formulate a calm, reasonable response while simultaneously trying to figure out what had prompted the question. Was it the seemingly gay (but very pleasant) instructor the kids had had at homeschool PE at the YMCA over the past few months? Was it just to try to trip me up?............to tease me (as my soon to be teenager is so fond of)?..........Or more significantly, to try to develop in his mind Catholic teaching on gay behavior and how Catholics should respond to people who are gay? Regardless of the reason, I knew my answer was important and that I should try to respond in a charitable, non-defensive, rational, catechetical manner.

I took a deep breath and told him that it would concern me because people that we spend time with can influence us and we need to surround ourselves with those that share our values so that we can lift each other up.

At this point one of Ben's eyebrows curved up and he looked at me with an expression of bewilderment on his face as he said, "Mom, it's just a GameBoy". When I realized what had happened I broke into laughter; and then managed to tell him, between chuckles, what I thought he had said. Of course, he got a big kick out of it and we laughed together for quite a while. It was one of those wonderful "mother/son" bonding moments I'm so very fond of. I love my son!

But no..........he still can't bring a GameBoy into the house!
